Stone Poems

Piano solo (also version for harp, clarinet and violin)

5 minutes

Piano version first performed by the composer at the Coraopolis UMC

on the 29th March, 2006. Instrumental version first performed by

Chroma in the Garrison Theatre, Shetland, on the 18th March, 2006.

These short pieces are based on folk-style melodies

written for specific celebrations over the last 6 years:

A Song for Jean (without words)

for Mrs. Jean Trunick, who was a fine alto,

on her 90th birthday, October 2005

Air

for Alan and Mairi Jamieson on their

wedding in Shetland, UK, August 2001

Peter’s Township

for Jack and Maureen Jones  on moving to a

new home near Pittsburgh, PA, in  2003

The title of the selection, from a poem by George Mackay Brown,

alludes to the three pieces which, like stone statues, are carved from

a very solid source material.

Sound sample - movement 1: A Song for Jean

(piano version) - performed by Alastair Stout.
